Horse Packing at Lake Como Recreation Area

Lake Como is a naturally occurring lake that has been raised for irrigation purposes. They have now developed a wonderful recreation area in the surrounding land as well as the new reservoir. There is boating, hiking, biking, interpretive trails, swimming, fishing, horse packing and use as a base camp to explore the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.

It's often used as a starting point for hunting over the divide into Idaho, as it is located only about 20 miles from the state border. Due to the extensive efforts of the backcountry horseman, the trails and campsites area exquisitely maintained. The equestrian campground is the only handicap accessible horse packing area west of the Mississippi. It was built in 1993.

There are three camping areas Equestrian, RV, and Tent with varying fees. Although, fees are not charged out of season when the mountains that surround the area are filled with snow. There's almost a dozen mountain biking and hiking trailheads in the park, varying from the Round the Lake Trail (10 miles) to short interpretative trails.

Don't forget the long wilderness trails that are well over 100 miles long for horse packing. There are water sources everywhere in the form of spigots. But fill up prior to taking to a trail. Groups may rent the Wood's Cabin per night. It's spectacular, but call in advance as it fills early in the year.

There is a wonderful beach area for swimming and sun bathing. The view of the large mountains overhead is chilling and so is the water! Wildlife is abundant including bears, but things seem to be kept clean, so do the same and there should be no problem.

In season, the recreation area is a Recreation Fee Test project. All vehicles parked within the recreation area must display a valid Recreation Pass. Passes are on a day per vehicle or season pass basis. Day passes are available at Lake Como and day or season passes are available at the Darby Ranger District or with area merchants.

Beach Area – 40 vehicle parking area, toilets and dressing rooms, 14 picnic tables, garbage, swim area and beach.
Boat Launch – 30 vehicle / boat and 7 passenger vehicle parking, toilets and boat launch.
Picnic Area – 15 vehicle parking, toilets, tables, grills and fire rings.
Rock Creek Horse Camp – 11 sites, 4 pull-through sites, hitch rails and feed troughs, accessible toilets, no water available, garbage facilities. One group site with large fire ring and benches and parking for 5 vehicles.
Creekside dispersed area – group camping.
Lake Como Campground – 10 RV sites with hookups and one group RV site.
Upper Campground – 11 tent sites.
Wood's Cabin Environmental Education Center and rental – The cabin sleeps 15 and holds up to 50 for meetings with toilets, wood stoves, and propane cook stove.

As our population ages, there is increasing emphasis on teaching and learning lifelong recreational skills. Research has shown that recreation is an important part of an individual’s social behavior. Golf: Good Senior Exercise, Just Recreation, Or A Complete Waste Of Time?

First of all, I tend to approach topics hoping to discuss them in relation to senior health and fitness.

However, a lot of facts about exercise and health tend to be true at any age, so, there is a lot of overlap.

Overlap or not, many seniors like golf as an activity. Many of these assume they are getting some of the health benefits of exercise by playing a round of golf now and then.

I guess the question we want to answer is this, “Is golf a good senior exercise choice, pleasant recreation, or simply a waste of time… at least as exercise, fitness, and health are concerned?”

Years ago, if you had asked me that question, I would have replied that it was a waste of time. I might have relented enough to say that if you walked, rather than riding a cart, I might allow that it was at least a form of light exercise. But, I probably would not have recommended it as an activity which promoted health and fitness.

I’m older, and, hopefully, wiser now.

First of all, when it comes to health benefits of one thing versus another, these days I believe that getting out of your chair and playing a round of golf, is far superior to just sitting in front of the TV.

Also, in these later years of life, I believe, based on personal experience, as well as a certain amount of research, that even the relatively mild activity of golf, can indeed produce health benefits, if not at the same level as a full cardio workout, or regular resistance training sessions.

While the actual amount of physical activity in a round of golf may be small, it’s better than nothing… especially in older citizens.

Other benefits of regular rounds of golf include the mental stimulation which comes with not only the game, but, getting there. Research has shown that just getting out and doing something, such as driving a car, or a golf ball, can help keep the mind more active and promote brain health.

The sort of social activity, and interaction, which often is a part of the game of golf, has also been shown to encourage brain function.

Interestingly enough, other studies have shown that keeping the mind active can contribute to physical health at any age.

So, in spite of the tendency of many to view the game of golf as mainly a good way to spoil a walk, as an activity, especially for seniors, it can be a little bit of physical and mental exercise… a recreation for both body and mind.

When you stop to think about it, humankind has always enjoyed some type of leisure and recreation, so the history of leisure and recreation goes back a very long way. The Romans had the Coliseum, where they watched chariot races and other entertainment. The Greeks had amphitheaters where they viewed drama and comedy, and of course they invented the Olympics, one of the greatest entertainment sport spectacles on earth. The list goes on. Even the Bible discusses singing, dancing, music, and other forms of acceptable recreation, so even the most ancient civilizations enjoyed entertainment and recreation of some sort.

The Middle Ages

Life for most people in the Middle Ages was dark and difficult. More emphasis was put on work, and there was little time for leisure. However, jousting tournaments, hunting tournaments, and the earliest forms of chess, checkers, and other games developed during this time. The people worked hard, the Church forbade many forms of entertainment, but there were still leisure pastimes to help develop the growing history of leisure and recreation.

The Industrial Revolution

This history of leisure and recreation goes far back in time, but leisure and recreation really took off when the Industrial Revolution hit Great Britain in the 1700s. The Industrial Revolution revolutionized work in the modern world, and helped create the modern factory environment. Machines mechanized the manufacture of fabric and fibers, and this ultimately led to more leisure time for the workers. They worked long hours in the factories, but they also had time off, and most employers gave at least some holidays off. Thus, people who had labored from dawn to dusk on farms in rural England, moved to the big city, got jobs in factories, and had leisure time away from their jobs. The Industrial Revolution helped create the notion of leisure time, and it helped create a different view of work and leisure.

The 20th Century

Francis Lewis: More Than Just a Signature

Have you ever heard of Francis Lewis? Does the name Abraham Clark ring a bell? How about John Hart?

Some of you may have guessed that these are the names of three of the men who, along with 53 others, signed that most historic of all documents, the Declaration of Independence. But do you know their stories? In fact, do you know anything about any of those men who pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor for the cause of freedom? We all know about Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, but the majority of these forefathers of ours remain in obscurity for most of us, I imagine.

This shouldn’t be.

I believe with all my heart that those Founding Fathers with whom we are all familiar were destined by God Himself to be our Founding Fathers. I also believe that each of the 56 men who signed our Declaration of Independence were brought forth for that ultimate purpose. America was not a coincidence, not just the result of a sequence of events.

A man who became known as “one of New York City’s leading radicals” in the Revolutionary cause began his life as a preacher’s son in Wales. How did the young Welshman Francis Lewis, born across the ocean and educated in Scotland & London, become a founding member of the Sons of Liberty and a signatory of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America?

“… for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me… calling… the man that executes my counsel from a far country… “ (Isaiah 46: 9, 11)

A man who involves himself in the forging of a nation, whose heart and passion compel him to break away from safety and ‘security’ to answer the call of liberty, must be a man of a certain character. Certain circumstances in a person’s life can build such a character. It is significant to me that both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, men extraordinaire, lost their fathers at an early age. They grew up without the supporting structure of a fully-orbed family, and I would surmise developed leadership qualities that may not have otherwise become a part of their personalities. The willingness to risk and to assume responsibility would be indispensable elements in a founding father. The loss of one’s earthly father early in life could surely contribute to the development of those characteristics.

Francis Lewis was an orphan by the age of 5.

Records do not appear to indicate just how he lost both parents so young, but he did, and thus entered the ranks of those stellar Founding Fathers who possibly led the way because they had lost their own fathers early in life.
